January 2015

Welcome the New Year! With this exciting issue, we celebrate our ten year anniversary! Wow! The world has changed. We have changed. We would like to look back at what changes we have been a part of, as well as, looking forward to what changes we want to make. We would like to thank you for being a part of this development. There are so many of you, we can hardly name you all here. We would especially like to thank those who helped us get started, specifically the hubs in San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Atlanta.

MADness in Action

The Hall of Fame for MAD Mavens. Our cover story highlights the daring adventures of the MAD people we have captured in stories since 2005.

Technical Opportunities

New tax laws make it easier than ever to save on taxes when you make charitable contributions. Save first on your income taxes through your charitable contributions, then save more through strategic estate planning. The hardest part will be figuring out where to give the money you saved! Our step by step instructions show you how to create a charitable endowment for your family. We show you the technical details for integrating your giving plan with your tax plan.

High Impact Giving

How do you make the biggest difference with the least wasted time/money/effort? Here we review and expand on the core tenants of making a bigger difference AND feeling better about it. First, it must bring you joy and stir your passions. Then you find the leverage point where the smallest thing can have the largest impact. What can make the snowball turn into an avalanche? Involve the right people and use your unique talents to move forward. Then multiply the effect using organizations and clubs to amplify all contributions--personal and financial. Be sure to have a complete vision of how you want to be involved, what difference you want to make, and how/when you want to move on to your next opportunity.

Family Wealth

Three or four generations coming together to share time, devote money, and offer talent to shared causes. It used to be so rare. Now there are retreats by community foundations and philanthropic coaches nationwide to facilitate families coming together with a shared vision. We revisit the Lumpkin Family Foundation ten years after our first article on Family Wealth to see what new ways they bring together their family to make a difference in the world and in the lives of their family members.

First Half

In a departure from our usual story-telling of youthful world changers, we describe trends we see supporting people under fifty who actively seek to change our world. From human resource retention strategies including compensation for volunteering to Internet Giving Circles and cyber-talent-exchanges, we will review the best practices. Be sure to read up on the latest in independent wealth strategies for those approaching the second half.

Second Half

As we plan better for financial independence, we look for more and more fulfilling ways to enjoy the second half of our life. Second Half department caught up with some of the individuals we profiled over the years. We wanted to know if their plans were working out for them, how they shifted their goals to meet their changing needs, and whether they were finding the happiness they sought out.

Coach Corner

Limiting Beliefs: You are what you eat. Strange yet true. And so to are you what you believe. What beliefs do you hold that limit you? What would you like to have/be/do? What beliefs snag you on the journey to achievement? We will walk through several examples of limiting beliefs. We show how to get past them to beliefs that are useful and productive for you.

Reporting from the Future

Our time traveling reporter returns from 2025 to let us in on a changed world. Our efforts pay off in 2025, the year of the World Family, where all children go to school, everyone has access to clean water, and deaths from childhood illness hit an all time record low. Our reporter claims that in 2025, all higher education tuition in the United States is endowed. Be sure to check out the article in Technical Opportunities for ways to use your educational IRA other than tuition.

Monthly Workout

Feel disconnected from yourself? As if each area of your life exists completely independent of all the others. Worse this disconnect has you working round the clock and wearing all sorts of masks? Check out this month's exercise for guides on how to create your mind map integration chart. We ask the questions that make you clear on your joy.
